The Springfield XD(M) is a 4.5" full- size pistol with many design features that make it intuitive to use. In 2007, Springfield Armory® shook the polymer pistol market with the introduction of the new XD(M). The XD(M) series forever changed the handgun landscape, and set new and higher standards for ergonomic comfort, ease of operation, features and performance. The superscript "M" in the XD(M) designation stands for "Match," and is also being used by Springfield as the code letter that sets it apart from the standard versions.
The XD(M) carries over the Government Model 1911 grip angle of the original XD...but with slightly modified contours in the upper area of the backstrap, on both sides of the frame behind the trigger, as well as in the magazine-release area of the grip. These minor modifications significantly improve the feel of the gun in your hand and your ability to manipulate its operating features without "breaking" your shooting grip. The XD(M) offers the best ergonomic experience possible in a polymer platform. With multiple interchangeable back straps, the XD(M) can be perfectly tailored to fit your hand. As it shares the same ergonomic grip angle as the standard XD and the 1911, the XD(M) points effortlessly and naturally. Aggressive mega-lock frame texturing and major grasp slide serrations keep the XD(M) in your hand and operational under any conditions. The slide and frame feature aesthetically pleasing contours that make it a more concealable pistol.
The Springfield XD(M) feeds from a double stack magazine that, in the case of the 9mm, holds nineteen cartridges, giving a total loaded capacity of twenty rounds with one in the chamber. It is a striker-fired pistol with a smooth double-action type trigger and has a few bonus features that are lacking in similar competing designs like the Glock series of handguns. The most obvious difference between the Glock and the XD(M) is a grip safety that will not allow the Springfield to fire unless the safety has actually been depressed, which happens naturally when the pistol is held properly. The XD(M) automatically goes back "on safe" when the grip is released, such as if the weapon is dropped or re-holstered. The XD(M) also has an articulating safety lever built into the trigger blade that is similar to the Glock. In addition, the XD(M) has a tactile and visible loaded-chamber indicator atop the slide, which makes it easy to ascertain whether the chamber is loaded without having to retract the slide. Also on the XD(M), the rear of the striker protrudes from the back of the slide slightly when the pistol is cocked and ready to fire, again allowing the shooter to determine the ready condition of the weapon, even in total darkness.
Another good feature of the XD(M) is an ambidextrous magazine release. It is not just reversible like other brands, but works instantly and simultaneously well from either side. The user friendly take-down latch makes cleaning quick and easy, where re-assembly is just as easy. Once the slide is locked to the rear, a simple takedown lever allows the gun to be painlessly disassembled, avoiding the cumbersome necessity of trying to manipulate a small release latch while holding the slide back with one hand against spring pressure. The recoil spring and guide rod assembly consists of two separate springs, which are captive upon the rod. The magazines are built primarily of stainless steel, and drop free from the weapon when released. The sights are a low profile combat style three-dot pattern that are greatly improved over the original XD. These new sights track more readily and pick up in the shooter's periphery much quicker. The frame in front of the trigger guard has a molded-in accessory rail to accommodate a light or laser sights, should the shooter so desires such tactical additions.
