Overview and History

• Production: Lithgow manufactured roughly 220,000 L1A1 rifles between 1959 and 1986. [1]

• Service: It served as the standard-issue service rifle for the Australian Army (and neighboring Commonwealth forces like New Zealand) through the Vietnam War and into the early 1990s. 

• Design: Derived from the Belgian FN FAL, the Commonwealth L1A1 variant was modified to fire in semi-automatic only, prioritizing controlled accuracy and marksmanship over full-auto waste.
